Research Director - Dr. Derrick Grant, Ph.D.
The main responsibility of the Research Director of the CKCI is to get patients enrolled in clinical trials and to initiate research projects. In addition, he will educate both the medical staff and public on cancer related issues, and expand the scope of medical treatment protocols at the institute that will benefit the people of the Virgin Islands and Eastern Carribbean.
Dr. Derrick Grant, B.Sc, M.Sc., Ph.D completed his educational science degrees at McGill University in Montreal Canada and subsequently pursued a postdoctoral degree at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He was previously Assistant Professor of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. His past work included the development of compounds to revascularize damaged heart tissues (at the NIH) and the testing novel antiangiogenesis compounds to inhibit the growth and spread of tumors. One of these compounds included the drug angiostatin that is now in phase III clinical trial and may be soon available for treating cancers with or without radiation combination. It is his goal to develop the highest standard of care available to cancer treatment by monitoring the latest publications and matching our patients' needs to appropriate clinical trials. Additionally he will be involved with the CKCI staff in the collection of patient history, treatment plans and outcomes to create a statistical data base that will enable us to track our progress and determine where our cancer-fighting efforts are needed and include these data in the National Cancer rates published by NCI and the CDC. In addition, it is his aim is to establish Prostate Cancer Research here in St. Thomas and include some of our brightest young people from the High Schools and University.
