Dr. Shirnett K. Williamson, MD – Radiation Oncologist
Dr. Shirnett K. Williamson is the Director of Radiation Oncology for the Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute. She completed her medical degree at Howard University College of Medicine and her residency in radiation oncology at Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. She worked as a clinical assistant professor of radiation oncology at the University of Pennsylvania for 9 years before forming the C.K.C.I. team. Previously, she was a chapter president of the American Cancer Society, a principal investigator for radiation clinical trials and the cancer liaison physician representing the American College of Surgeons and Commission on Cancer to her institution. She received a community Service Award and honor by the mayor of Trenton NJ and was listed several times in Top Doctors: New York Metro Area by Castle Connolly. She is board certified. Radiation therapy uses high-energy X-rays, electron beams, or radioactive isotopes to kill cancer cells without exceeding safe doses to normal tissues. The key to successful treatment is getting the appropriate amount of radiation to the tumor while limiting radiation to surrounding normal tissues. The radiation oncologist works in conjunction with a multi-disciplinary team to design a customized treatment plan to best treat each patient's malignancy.
