The Schneider Regional Medical Center Welcomes Samuel L. Hughes, MD MBA as Director of Radiation Oncology for the Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute
December 2009 – The Schneider Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce and introduce Samuel L. Hughes, MD MBA as our new Director of Radiation Oncology for the Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute. He joined our team in September 2009 and has already made significant contributions to our community.
Dr. Hughes comes to us from the Philadelphia area, where he was Clinical Director of the Radiation Oncology Department at Cooper University Hospital, Core Team member of the Cooper Gamma Knife and CyberKnife units, and Assistant Professor at the UMDNJ School of Medicine. With American Board of Radiology certification and more than a decade of experience in radiation oncology, Dr. Hughes brings expertise in virtually all modalities of radiation including Stereotactic Radiosurgery for brain and body tumors, Image-Guided Radiation Therapy, High Dose Rate Brachytherapy, Hypofractionated Radiation, and Radiopharmaceutical therapy.
Originally, Dr. Hughes came from the Midwest. He attended Washington University, in St. Louis, Missouri for his undergraduate studies and then medical school at the University of Missouri School Of Medicine, Columbia, Missouri. He completed his radiation oncology residency at Thomas Jefferson University, where he was named Chief Resident.
Recently, Dr. Hughes obtained his Masters of Business Administration degree from the Stern School of Business, New York University, New York City, New York. With a specialization in Finance and Management, he has global experience with business in Chile, Argentina, and China.
Dr. Hughes is a presenter at international and national meetings on the newest and most advanced radiation treatment approaches for Breast, GI and Neurological cancers. He has written numerous scientific, peer-reviewed publications in the treatment of cancer with radiation. Dr. Hughes has been primary investigator on new clinical trials focusing on state-of-the-art technology for treatment of definitive and metastatic breast cancer. He has also been co-investigator on clinical trials for brain, lung, prostate, gynecologic, and head and neck cancers as well as for symptom management for bone metastases. He is on national committees that discuss the newest and most promising approaches in the treatment of cancer and has received several ‘Top Doc’ awards in recognition of his professional services in the Philadelphia area.
The Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute is delighted with this new affiliation and is fortunate to have such a fine physician in our area. We feel that our service extension through the Eastern Caribbean is an excellent match with Dr. Hughes’ skill sets and his desire to provide high-quality medical care to the people of the US Virgin Islands and the Eastern Caribbean at-large.
