Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Services
The Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute is pleased to offer pediatric hematology and pediatric oncology services by a board certified pediatric hematologist-oncologist. The most common childhood cancers include the blood cancers such as leukemias and lymphomas. The initial phase of acute leukemias requires intensive chemotherapy which can be coordinated with centers in the mainland. Subsequent phases of treatment include consolidation, maintenance and follow up care which can be provided at this facility. If a patient requires a stem cell or bone marrow transplant, this will have to be coordinated with a facility in the US mainland. Most of the lymphomas can be treated at this institute.
Other common childhood cancers include brain tumor, wilms tumor, sarcoma, neuroblastoma, retinoblastoma, hepatoblastoma, germ cell tumor. Some of these tumors may also require coordination with other facilities for specialized pediatric surgery. Subsequent chemotherapy services and follow up care can be done at CKCI.
The pediatric hematologist also evaluates and manages a variety of non cancerous blood disorders. These disorders include abnormalities in the red cells, white cells and platelets as well as bleeding and clotting problems.
The red cell disorders include abnormalities in the red blood cell structure, enzymes and proteins. In our population, one of the most common abnormalities is a disorder of one of the red cell proteins called hemoglobin which results in sickle cell disease.
Disorders of white blood cells include abnormalities in number or function of the white cells. Abnormally low counts as well as abnormal function of the white blood cells may predispose patients to repeated and severe infections. Abnormally high white blood cells may also need investigation.
Platelet disorders may result from an abnormality in platelet number or platelet function. A low platelet count or thrombocytopenia may sometimes result in an increased risk of bleeding. An abnormally high platelet count may result in an increased risk of clotting.
Patients with bleeding disorders such as hemophilia and von willebrand disease as well as clotting disorders can be evaluated, diagnosed and managed at CKCI.
Your primary medical doctor can refer you to CKCI for evaluation of any of these disorders. For appointments, please call 340 775 5433 ext 8200
